What is BIM?

Building Information Modeling is often mistaken to be a 3D model or even a particular brand of software like Revit. Instead, BIM is all about the flow of information in the building design process from inception to construction to operation using an intelligent 3D model.

Software is an integral part of BIM as it allows for greater intelligent design and construction processes. However, the understanding of project expectations, workflows, timelines, and data collaboration between all stakeholders is what makes BIM, BIM.

The National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) sums it up well: "A BIM is a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. As such it serves as a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility forming a reliable basis for decisions during its lifecycle from inception onward."

What About BIM in Canada?

We are seeing and hearing more and more demands for Revit and BIM in general in the Canadian Building Industry. BIM is increasing in momentum and we don't see it slowing down anytime soon.

What are the Challenges of BIM?

All significant changes in technology and work processes require time and education. Intelligent BIM use changes the relationship and contractual agreement between participants.
